Some of us are fun women and will be thinking of a party or gift or some way of serving in a fun way. Some of us are women who will think of serving as a job and will “just do it” when there is a need. Some of us are planners who want to serve and do it perfectly. Some of us are the kind that don’t want to hurt others feelings so tend to over commit.
We are each a little different and will serve in different ways. But the Bible is clear that we are to glorify God in our serving others. So every one can serve somewhere. God will equip us to do service for him.
D. L. Moody was an uneducated shoemaker whom God saved. A man named Reynolds told about the first time he ever saw D. L. Moody, before Moody became famous. Moody was in a little shanty that had been abandoned by a saloon keeper, holding a small black boy in his arms, reading to him the story of the prodigal son. Moody couldn’t even read all the words, so he had to skip them. Reynolds thought, “If God can ever use such an instrument as that for His honor and glory, it will certainly astonish me!” Yet we all know how God used D. L. Moody. He can use you and me that way, just as He used shy, timid Timothy. We’ve been saved to serve!
A sad story is about a woman lying in her sick bed, obviously in misery. In the sink were stacked piles of dirty dishes. A huge basket of clothes to be ironed sat nearby. Two dirty children were fighting in one corner, and in the other a cat sat licking spilled milk. A smiling woman stood in the doorway and the caption had her saying, “Well, Florence, if there is anything I can do to help, don’t hesitate to let me know.” Thought:what about taking a few minutes and wash the dishes or see what the issue is for the children or iron is possible. Did I just wear you out?
Obviously there are times when we want to serve and we just can’t at that time. If we have a mind-set of serving as Philippians 2:3,4 tell us then we don’t have to be too hard on ourselves. We are not superwomen who fly in and out of windows but we can be a woman whose desire is to serve as we can.
There is a balance. May I remind us that we have priorities. If you love God, He comes first i e devotions daily and prayer and putting His Word first. Then if we are married, our husband comes second closely under Gods position. Then if we have children, they are next in line; the care and provision for them is a priority. Then if there is time in our day, we extend a helping hand. There are ways to do both by sharing what we have prepared for dinner with another family. Or have a friends children over to play while the mom rest or has an important errand to run. There are so many ways to serve others. Are you open?
During our years of raising four daughters, we adopted an older lady to be our children gramma because we didn’t have family who were Christians and we needed help and a godly influence. Her name was Gramma Faye. She was 92 when she went to heaven.
She was a server; she taught me to serve others in any way I could and not for reward, she served until she entered heaven. I was a perfectionist housekeep and wanted everything in life to be perfect. She used to shake her little skinny finger in my face and say, ” Hon…ey people are more important than things.” Oh that was a hard lesson. She knew the balance of serving.
In her last years when all she could do was to sit in a chair beside her window with her telephone stand and Bible and books beside her, she would watch the lizards climb the multistory building she lived in and watch the birds and animals along her path outside her window, she could no longer go out to serve. She sat there watching these things and praised God for His goodness to her. However each Monday her pastor of the little church where she had served for years, came to visit and bring her the list of ones that were missing that Sunday. It was her job to call each person and tell them they were missed and take prayer request. What a serving woman she was. Im so grateful for her influence in my life.
These are a few Gracious Girls in Bakersfield Ca. They have learned the joy of serving. I had the joy of teaching them the product in Gracious Girls. It is an 8 week course in character building and learning to serve.
Think about a person who has influenced you to love and good works – to serving others.
Can you share ways you choose to serve? We can each serve in some manner. What is your way? I would enjoy hearing from you.
